School takes up a lot of our time, along with the homework teachers give us. But sometimes we need to get a job to start saving for college or buying our own things. It might seem nervewracking to go out and apply for jobs and do well in interviews, but it’s something everyone has to do, so it’s best to prepare for it. These students share their jobs and tips they have for finding one.

Senior, Matthew Quinn, 17

Q: Where do you work?

A: Footlocker.

Q: Have you held any other jobs?

A: McDonald’s.

Q: Did anyone encourage you to apply for this job?

A: I was encouraged by a friend to apply with him.

Q: Do you feel it’s important to look professional?

A: Yes, because it makes you look nicer.

Q: What would you tell someone who just turned 16?

A: Apply everywhere.

Q: What would you suggest about how to talk to a potential boss?

A: Always make eye contact and don’t be shy.

Senior, Ana Larson, 17

A: Urabandale Elementary School, Adventure Time.

Q: Have you held any other jobs?

A: Fareway.

Q: Is it important to look professional?

A: It depends on the job, my job requires my bottom half to look professional.

A: Check up on all your applications it shows interest and commitment.

A: Use big words, seem smart, and act like you know what you’re talking about.

A: Yes, it makes you look like you care to be there.

A: Remember, there is always a wrong answer to the interview questions.

A: Always be respectful and friendly.

A: Aspen & Shoe Carnival.

Q: Have you held any other jobs?

A: McDonald’s.

Q: What would you tell someone who just turned 16?

A: Make sure to apply to places you kind of like so you’ll want to stay longer. It will also look better on your resume the longer you stay at a job.

A: Be formal and engaged, make eye contact, nod, and use a firm handshake.
